Abstract

The development of research competencies is an essential component of contemporary medical education. Endocrinology offers a particularly relevant context for research-oriented learning because it involves complex physiological mechanisms, chronic diseases, longitudinal clinical data, and evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. Nevertheless, the integration of authentic research activities into undergraduate endocrinology education requires a structured pedagogical approach that connects scientific inquiry with measurable learning outcomes.

This article aims to develop a methodological framework for fostering medical students’ research competencies through student-led research projects integrated into endocrinology education.

A conceptual and analytical approach was employed to synthesize established principles of research-based learning, competency-oriented medical education, evidence-based medicine, and undergraduate research training. Relevant peer-reviewed reviews and international recommendations were examined to identify essential research competencies, instructional stages, assessment strategies, and ethical requirements. The analysis was used to construct a structured educational framework. No original participant data were collected, and no experimental intervention was conducted.

The proposed framework comprises six interconnected stages: identification of a clinically relevant research problem, formulation of a research question, critical appraisal of scientific literature, research design and ethical preparation, data analysis and interpretation, and scientific dissemination with reflective evaluation. The framework integrates endocrinological subject knowledge with methodological, analytical, digital, communicative, and ethical competencies. A competency-based assessment matrix is proposed to align learning outcomes with research activities and assessment instruments.  Student-led research projects may provide an authentic context for developing scientific reasoning, critical appraisal, data literacy, collaborative learning, and academic writing. Their educational value depends on structured supervision, realistic project scope, alignment between learning outcomes and assessment, and appropriate management of research ethics. The framework requires empirical validation before claims concerning its effectiveness can be established.

Ntegrating supervised research projects into endocrinology education provides a theoretically grounded approach to developing medical students’ research competencies. Future empirical studies should examine changes in objectively assessed research performance, the feasibility of implementation, and the sustainability of acquired competencies.
