Communicative and Competency-Based Approaches in Developing Students’ English Written Production

This article describes the communicative and competency-based approaches that underpin contemporary foreign-language education place considerable emphasis on learners’ active engagement in productive language use. Within the EIP model, this orientation is reflected in the predominance of oral communication during classroom instruction. Furthermore, a number of independent learning activities, including video production and the development of digital narratives in the Digital Story format, also require students to demonstrate their oral communication abilities. The principal forms of spoken interaction subject to systematic monitoring and assessment include monologic, dialogic, and polylogic discourse. These forms of communication are generally practiced and evaluated in three major educational contexts: regular classroom activities, interdepartmental or interinstitutional competitions, and public examinations organized at the departmental level.
