A Comparative Analysis Of Color-Based Proverbs In English And Uzbek

Abstract

Proverbs represent an essential part of a nation’s linguistic and cultural heritage, reflecting collective wisdom, values, and worldview. Among various types of proverbs, those containing color components occupy a special place, as colors carry deep symbolic, emotional, and cultural meanings. This article provides a comparative analysis of color-based proverbs in English and Uzbek languages. The study aims to identify similarities and differences in the semantic, cultural, and symbolic functions of color terms used in proverbs. By analyzing examples from both languages, the research reveals how colors such as black, white, red, and green function as metaphorical tools expressing moral judgments, social attitudes, and cultural perceptions. The findings demonstrate that while some color symbolism is universal, many meanings are culture-specific, shaped by historical, social, and psychological factors.
